Gethsemane, A revelation of our Spirituality and Priority

Judas, whom he loved and cared for for 3 yrs. The most agonizing thing was that JUDAS WILL BE ETERNALLY SEPARATED WITH JESUS.  Judas will spend eternity in hell!!

“The time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears” (II Timothy 4:3).

Acts 2:37

(NIV)  When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

(NLV)  When the Jews heard this, their hearts were troubled. They said to Peter and to the other missionaries, ‘Brothers, what should we do?’

This blog/message may trouble your heart!

Yet this will make us a better and a firm follower of our Lord JESUS CHRIST.

Mat 26:36  Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

Mat 26:37  He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled.

Mat 26:38  Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

Mat 26:39  Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Mat 26:40  Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter.

Mat 26:41  Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.

Mat 26:42  He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”

Mat 26:43  When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy.

Mat 26:44  So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

Mat 26:45  Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Mat 26:46  Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Gethsemane and Christianity

What does Gethsemane mean to Jesus? What does it means to you?

Gethsemane…

 A. Place of Extreme SORROW

Listen to His own words about His pain

34 And He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch.”
„deeply grieved¡¨ related to the word from which we get the word periphery and means surrounded by sorrow

(Luke a physician stated in Lk. 22:24) sweat like drops of blood. under great emotional distress, tiny blood vessels rupture in the sweat glands producing a mixture of sweat and blood.

Place of STRUGGLE

What was the cause of His extreme pain and struggle?

  • Not Fear of dying
  • Not the betrayal of Judas

  • Not the fear of being abandoned  that the other 11 would run away
  • Not the fear of  injustice and public humiliation
  • Not the fear and pain of loneliness

Jesus was extremely sorrowful deeply grieved to the point of death for two reasons:

  1. Because HE will become sin
  2. Because of coming suffering (flogging, crown of thorns, crucifixion)
  3.  and HIS soon separation to HIS FATHER

At the moment He would become sin He would for the first and only time in all eternity feel the utter forsaken of God the Father and God the Holy Spirit as they turned away and let the cup of God’s wrath be poured out upon Jesus as He became the sacrifice for our sins.

Another extremely painful  thing is becoming sin and being forsaken was actually experiencing the agony on the cross.

Place of STRUGGLE

 B.  Place of Total SURRENDER

 Image

Mat 26:50  Jesus replied, “Friend, do what you came for.” Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.

Mat 26:51  With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

Mat 26:52  Put your sword back in its place, Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.

Mat 26:53  Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

Mat 26:54  But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”

Mat 26:55  At that time Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me.

Mat 26:56  But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

One of the greatest expression of submission.

 C.   Place of Painful Separation

Jesus will be separated with His disciples.

Jesus will be left all alone shortly, as planned by His Father. It will be fulfilled.

Mat 26:46  Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Mat 26:47  While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people.

Mat 26:48  Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.”

Mat 26:49  Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.

Separation with HIS 12 disciples.

Separation from Judas.

The greatest mistake/sin ever committed in human history.

  1. To abandon the Light, Creator, the resurrection, etc.

Many abandoned Jesus in different ways..

Neglecting our daily devotion, missing our responsibility in sharing the gospel, etc..

But another stage/level where Judas reached was to betray!

2.  To betray.

What made gethsemane more painful? It was There where Jesus was abandon and betrayed by Judas; a person whom He slept with and ate for almost 3 yrs.

To be abandoned is painful. But to be betrayed a person whom you slept with and ate with for almost 3 yrs is what made it worst.

What made this one extremely painful for Jesus is that its not just separation with Judas, whom he loved and cared for for 3 yrs. The most agonizing thing was that JUDAS WILL BE ETERNALLY SEPARATED WITH JESUS.  Judas will spend eternity in hell!!

 D.  Place of Fulfillment

Mat 26:56  But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

If God’s Word is fulfilled to one’s life, it means blessings. Supernatural favor of God.

But here, Jesus said, so that it will be fulfilled.

For GOD’s favor and supernatural blessings to be received, we need to go to our GETHSEMANE. Where we will be tested of our loyalty, submission and obedience.

Lessons:

  • In Gethsemane, we need a company

Mat 26:36  Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

Mat 26:37  He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled.

Mat 26:38  Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

Gethsemane; You will be identified to a “criminal” Jesus.  Jesus was charged and treated as traitor, criminal, and to be with a criminal is you’re putting yourselves, your family in grave danger.

  • Gethsemane, a test of INTIMACY and LOYALTY.

Don’t tell me if you’re following Jesus. Tell me if UNTIL WHEN YOU ARE WILLING TO FOLLOW? Tell me if you’re willing to follow to Gethsemane?

  • Gethsemane, A revelation of our Spirituality and Priority

No one enjoys and enters gethsemane. It’s a stumblingblock. Its an agonizing experience. It’s a horrible experience.

Jesus was able to enter and endure the pains and extremely sorrowful gethsemane because HE knows what He’s fighting for. He knows His purpose. He knows His destiny. He knows His reason for existence. He knows what will glorify the Father.

Most especially, He knows what’s best for Him. At first Gethsemane is worst

Mat 26:36  Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”

Luk 22:39  Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.

Luk 22:40  On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”

There will be times when we must enter our “Garden of Gethsemane”

  Times of distress, sorrow, loneliness.

Jesus found prayer to be the key for turning a garden of suffering into a garden of strength.

As Christians we have a similar blessing in prayer:

Gethsemane, place of sorrow, struggle, separation and surrender..

Likewise, place of fulfillment!!!

Place of receiving GOD’s divine promises and supernatural experience of GOD’s presence.

Do not fear nor reject your Gethsemane.

God bless you as you enter to your Gethsemane.

“Giving My Best To My MASTER” (Psalms 90:12)

Intro:

Birthdays and anniversaries are occasions we celebrate. At the same time it is a fact that it makes our life shorter

Every birthday is a withdrawal from our time bank here on earth.

So the question we need to ask as we celebrate anniversary,

HOW TO MAKE THE REST OF M LIFE THE BEST OF MY LIFE?

Giving My Best To My MASTER

Psa 90:12  Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Mt. 6:33)

I think you can summarize what Jesus said here in three words: “first things first.” This may sound easy and simple, however, for us fallen beings, what is first to GOD is our last!. The struggle in life is NOT saying that we love GOD, but to prove that love for HIM through our daily lives.

Loving God is not just serving Him. Not just worshipping Him. Not just proclaiming Him. But its giving our very best to Him.

How can I give my best to my MASTER?

  1. Let GOD Decide for you in every situation of your life

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Mt. 6:33)

Mat 6:10  may your kingdom come,  may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Let GOD Decides for you in every situation of your life

HIS kingdom will only come if we allow GOD to make decision for us in all situations we are in.

** his Kingdom will come if will come if we allow God to make decisions for our daily life, activities and every second of our lives.

Question: How can God decide for us? Where is He?

Answer: we allow God to decide for our lives by listening and obeying His Word and by listening and submission to our GOD-given spiritual authorities

We cannot have GODLY PRIORITIES  through our own life alone. We’re by nature weak, selfish, sunful. We need guidance through His Word and through His spiritual authorities.

How can I give my best to my MASTER?

HOW TO MAKE THE REST OF YOUR LIFE THE BEST OF YOUR LIFE?

By allowing GOD Decides for you in every situation of your life

Decisions made without the guidance of His Word and spiritual leaders are dangerous.

Wrong and evil decisions are always made in our private lives.

Our private lives  must be exposed to the LIGHT of HIS WORD and through the wisdom of HIS GODly leaders assigned to us.

Teach us to number our days aright through His word and His God given authorities.

w/o submission to HIS Word and w/o submission to leaders, we put our lives, our future, our ministries in the hands of the devil.

w/o His Word and w/o His appointed authorities, life is  out order and out of control.

Priorities are wrong. Motives are wrong. Therefore, life is wrong.

“seek first the kingdom of God…”  we need to be kingdom mindset. We need to know what are the purposes of the kingdom and pursue it. We need to know what are the needs of the kingdom and provide it, we need to support the kingdom

.

Get busy in kingdom priorities.

Know the values of the kingdom.

How can I give my best to my MASTER?

  1. Let GOD’s holiness becomes your Daily Passion

**SEEK PERSONAL PURITY

Not only are we to seek His kingdom, we are to seek “His righteousness.” That is, not only are we to be seeking God’s control over us, but we are also to be seeking God’s character within us.

The kingdom of God is not only to be inwardly experienced. It is to be outwardly expressed.

You see, if God is ruling over you, then His righteousness must be within you.

Because a man’s character is simply the outward expression of whatever is controlling him inwardly.

Let GOD’s holiness becomes your Daily Passion

How can I give my best to my MASTER?

3.  Let GOD’s promises be your anchor for your daily challenges

Life is full of challenges, battles, opportunities and temptations.

Everyday countless of casualties,,  quitters, losers,  in times of confusion and pains. They don’t know where to go, what to do and what crutch to hold on.

GOD’S ETERNAL AND SURE PROMISES, The only crutch we can hold on in times of confusion and hopelessness.

Do not ask for GOD’s guidance if you’re not willing to step.

Do not make the study of Word as a front to please people, the devil knows it. God knows it. It won’t help you.

Now the Lord says that if you will seek His kingdom and His righteousness, “all these things shall be added unto you.

Now the Lord has promised that if you will seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, you will have all the things you need.

It is our job to serve God. It is His job to supply us. Majority of God’s people have that backwards. Most people think that it is our job to supply us and it is God’s job to serve us.

Giving My Best To My MASTER

4. LET it be your life’s rule, “I AM NOT FOR SALE

Nothing in you is for sale. The totality of you is GOD’s property

We can give the best to our Master if we hold to HIS teaching that we were bought with a price, HE owns us. Therefore. We are NOT FOR SALE.

Gen 25:28  Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for fresh game,44 but Rebekah loved45 Jacob.

Gen 25:29  Now Jacob cooked some stew,46 and when Esau came in from the open fields, he was famished.

Gen 25:30  So Esau said to Jacob, “Feed47 me some of the red stuff — yes, this red stuff — because I’m starving!” (That is why he was also called48 Edom.)49

Gen 25:31  But Jacob replied, “First50 sell me your birthright.”

Gen 25:32  “Look,” said Esau, “I’m about to die! What use is the birthright to me?”51

Gen 25:33  But Jacob said, “Swear an oath to me now.”52 So Esau53 swore an oath to him and sold his birthright54 to Jacob.

Gen 25:34  Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and lentil stew; Esau ate and drank, then got up and went out.55 So Esau despised his birthright.56

Birthright, your right as God’s child. Your right to God’s blessings

Your right to become powerful witness and Christian leaders.

Your right to become a world changer. Your right to become history makers

Esau sold his right

LET it be your life’s rule, I’ AM NOT FOR SALE

“Spiritual Erosion” (1Cor 10:12; 1Peter 5:8)

Spiritual Erosion, A gradual but devastating process of moral and spiritual decline.

Its proven that what we keep secret is more likely evil.  Have the courage to expose your secrets to your trusted spiritual leader.

Introduction:

Landslides, sinkholes. Lands slowly sliding downward. Land eaten by water system. Land slowlty “missing” and “collapsing.”

Meaning of Erosion

Webster defines erosion as “The process of where something is diminished or destroyed by degrees.

SPIRITUAL EROSION

Danger and deceitfulness of spiritual erosion..

No one planned to destroy his/her family, ministry. They just woke up one day and found out that they came to a point that it’s impossible to return. They realized one day that what they did secretly is now a headline. The secrets of their hearts are now the talk of the town.

They went through spiritual erosion. A gradual but devastating process of moral and spiritual decline.

Spiritual erosion is very hard to stop because..

A. It is always silent

B. it is always slow

C. it is always subtle.

D. It is secret

Once our lives were pure and authentic. We’re so close to GOD and passionate to HIS will. What went wrong? How did it happened?

Erosion’s outcome is always severe and fatal. Very humiliating.

Erosion is slow, silent, and secret but time will come that it will be revealed and when it does revealed, we can’t stand the pain and consequences.

Erosion, landslides,, starts in one minor/small/non sense decision, but wrong decision.

Starts with a little word called compromise.

Verses that reveals the danger of Spiritual Erosion

Here are some verses that will reveal that anytime a GODly servant may fall. An active spiritual leader may collapsed. And a strong foundation that we build for many years may collapsed.. anytime.

1Pe 5:8  Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

Luk 4:13  That completed the testing. The Devil retreated temporarily, lying in wait for another opportunity.  (MSG Bible)

1Co 10:12  So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!

1Co 9:26  Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air.

1Co 9:27  No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Stages of Spiritual Erosion:

  1. A.   Erosion usually starts in our Unguarded Moments

    (1Pet. 5:8)

Truths in spiritual erosion:

It starts very small, unplanned,

>> Compromise:

The great preacher F. B. Myer said “No man suddenly becomes base [corrupt, worthless, immoral].” It’s a gradual process of spiritual erosion

The process of erosion had taken its toll and was now on display for all to see.

A  little compromise will be the big difference in the process.

One major sign of erosion is, we start to rationalize our wrong choices and sins.

Another signal of spiritual erosion is our dimishing desire to spiritual things and spiritual community.

If we do spiritual things and when we’re a community if believers, in many cases that’s for cover up of our inner erosion

We may still do the things of God, but we do it for our protection and to cover our erosion.

  • there will be an Altered life, shattered testimony

So it is with compromise in a life or in a church. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, one rationalization leads to another. This triggers a series of damaging alterations in a life or in a church that was once stable, strong, and reliable.

Compromise. we allow the slow-moving tentacles of evil to wrap themselves around us, squeezing the joys and rewards of obedience from our lives. It happens so silently, so subtly, we hardly realize it’s taking place.

SPIRITUAL EROSION, usually begin in small, insignificant ways, so it’s easy to underestimate their potential for damage.

The slope becomes slippery, and each subsequent act of disobedience is easier to rationalize.

Every inch of EROSION weakens your conscience and makes it more difficult to reverse the road where we’re travelling.

> Spiritual erosion is a spiral and downhill .

> Everyone lives their life according to a certain set of principles but the question is which of these principles are open for negotiation and which are not.

> When it comes to moral values and other principles spelled out in God’s Word there is no room for negotiation.

>>  take note:  The downward road of spiritual erosion usually gives us the feeling of happiness, ecstasy and fulfillment, at least for a short moment. That is the devil’s secret in enticing God’s people. The devil gives us a taste of heave that will later becomes hell.

The Unseen danger though real we hardly accept and recognized it. Spiritual erosion though fatal is enjoyable while still its secret in the eyes of men. But everything is laid bare to God’s eyes (Heb. 4:13)

After a little compromise, a hidden desire will be born in our hearts. And that desire is dangerous because it’s uncontrollable.

  1. B.   Uncontrollable desire

2Sa 11:1  In the spring of the year, at the time when kings1 normally conduct wars,2 David sent out Joab with his soldiers3 and the entire Israelite army.4 They defeated the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed in Jerusalem.5

2Sa 11:2  One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of his palace.6 From the roof he saw a woman bathing. Now this woman was very attractive.7

2Sa 11:3  So David sent someone to inquire about the woman. The messenger8 said, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”

** Those who are on the process of spiritual erosion do  not know that they are slowly losing their sensitivity toward God.

>> It’s very important to note that when spiritual erosion takes place to a person, that person stars to reject his GOD-given authorities.

He/she will start to rebel to his parents, spiritual leaders and all people who will try to stop his spiritual erosion.

The desires of a spiritually eroded people of God will then produce uncontrolled choices.

  1. C.    Uncontrolled choices

We all knew that David’s minor temptation with Bathsheba led him to a minor compromise. Then it became a big moral crime against God. David was eaten alive by his passion that his decisions and choices are now out of God’s plan and totally evil.

2Sa 11:4  David sent some messengers to get her.9 She came to him and he had sexual relations with her.10 (Now at that time she was in the process of purifying herself from her menstrual uncleanness.)11 Then she returned to her home.

David’s plan to Uriah

  1. D.   Unexpected Outcome

2Sa 12:9  Why have you shown contempt for the word of the Lord by doing evil in my14 sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and you have taken his wife as your own.15 You have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.

2Sa 12:10  So now the sword will never depart from your house. For you have despised me by taking the wife of Uriah the Hittite as your own.’

2Sa 12:11  This is what the Lord says: ‘I am about to bring disaster on you16 from inside your own house. Right before your eyes I will take your wives and hand them over to your companion.17 He will have sexual relations with18 your wives in broad daylight.19

2Sa 12:12  Although you have acted in secret, I will do this thing before all Israel, and in broad daylight.’ “20

  1. E.    Unforgettable damage

Unimaginable damage

The life of David inspires the whole Christendom. Yet, it cannot escape from our eyes the tremendous damage that David’s fall brought to his family and to the nation of Israel as a whole.

It reveals our passion

David’s steps to recovery:

  • Undying passion to get right with God

  • Unconditional submission to Nathan

2Sa 12:1  So the Lord sent Nathan1 to David. When he came to him, Nathan2 said,3 “There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor.

2Sa 12:2  The rich man had a great many flocks and herds.

2Sa 12:3  But the poor man had nothing except for a little lamb he had acquired. He raised it, and it grew up alongside him and his children.4 It used to5 eat his food,6 drink from his cup, and sleep in his arms.7 It was just like a daughter to him.

2Sa 12:4  “When a traveler came to the rich man, he did not want to use one of his own sheep or cattle to feed8 the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the poor man’s lamb and fed it to9 the man who had come to him.”

2Sa 12:5  Then David became very angry at this man. He said to Nathan, “As surely the Lord lives, the man who did this deserves to die!10

2Sa 12:6  Because he committed this cold-hearted crime, he must pay for the lamb four times over.”11

2Sa 12:7  Nathan said to David, “You are that man! This is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘I chose12 you to be king over Israel and I rescued you from the hand of Saul.

2Sa 12:8  I gave you your master’s house, and put your master’s wives into your arms.13 I also gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if all that somehow seems insignificant, I would have given you so much more as well!

2Sa 12:13  Then David exclaimed to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord!” Nathan replied to David, “Yes, and the Lord has forgiven21 your sin. You are not going to die.

  • Courage to accept the consequences

How to stop Erosion

Note:  in every decision check your motive.

>> Have the courage to reject and change the decision if the motive is wrong/evil

>> The need for accountability group. Share your feelings, fears, temptations to your group leader (cell groups, etc..)

** Its proven that what we keep secret is more likely evil.  Have the courage to expose your secrets to your trusted spiritual leader.

Be reminded…

The Attack of Erosion is our character.

God made us in His own image. The image that sin destroyed.

That’s why Apostle Paul labored throughout  his entire life perfecting saints.

Col 1:28  We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.

God is at work in your life making you like Jesus Christ. Therefore, anything that makes you more like Jesus Christ is good. Anything that pulls you away from Jesus Christ is bad.

God is not committed to making you happy and successful. He is committed to making you like his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. And whatever it takes to make you more like Jesus is good.

God Intends to Shape Us Into the Image of Christ.

  1. A.    So the attack of erosion is character

Like wise another attack of spiritual erosion is fruitlessness.  God’s mandate for His people is Fruitfulness. Much fruits. Fruits that will last intends us to serve us as Christ served us,  so the attack of erosion is fruitlessness.

  1. Another attack of spiritual erosion is our submission.

GOD is the source of all existing authorities. To rebel to earthly authority is to rebel against God. God intends submission to His Father.

A spiritually eroded person submits to no one but to his will alone.

Another attack of erosion is our intimacy to God and His Word.

Spiritually eroded person is extremely cold to God and His Word.

God intends us to be   passionate to His Word and Will.. so the attack of erosion is to remove our passion to His Word and go against His will

A friend sent me a text message that will surely encourage those spiritually eroded Christians. May this message and this quote revived us and brings us to our knees.

If you’re one of those spiritually eroded people of God. If your passion to spiritual things died.

If you’re alienated to God and to your spiritual community.  Don’t lose hope. Yet, no one can help you bounce back. Going back to God is starts within you. Decide and Act now.

Return to your first love.

Here’s the quote.

If you give up  on the coldness of the winter, u’l surely miss

The promise of spring, the beauty of summer and the fulfillment of fall.

Don’t let the pain of one season destroys the  joys and blessings of the rest.

Don’t judge life by just one difficult season , instead persevere and make tough choices that will enable you to return to the next season.

Paul’s warning..

“Let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12).

Every day is a day I could begin the fall.

Any life and anybody can erode

how easy it is to say, “It will be different for me!”  “it will never happen to me!”

Anytime, anywhere we can return to HIM.

Jon 4:2 He prayed to the Lord and said, “Oh, Lord, this is just what I thought3 would happen4 when I was in my own country.5 This is what I tried to prevent6 by trying to escape to Tarshish!7 — because I knew8 that you are gracious and compassionate, slow to anger9 and abounding10 in mercy, and one who relents concerning threatened judgment.11

Paul’s Spiritual Balance Sheet (Phil. 3:1-11)

The works of the flesh cannot please God. But as we yield ourselves to the Holy Spirit and trust in Him to work through us, our confidence is in the Lord and not in our flesh.

The Bible is clear – confidence in the flesh is sin.

Intro.

Big accounting, Business terms, loss, investment, balance, gain, debit, expenses, cash advance, remuneration, wage, slary,  credit, all terms are used to know one important thing – PROFIT

If yiu’re in the business, you need to know if the business gives you prpfit. If not stop the business.

If you’re working, you need to balance, study everything, hours of work, expenses, food, etc,,

Definition of ‘Balance Sheet’  (form internet)

A financial statement that summarizes a company’s assets, liabilities and shareholders’ equity at a specific point in time. These three balance sheet segments give investors an idea as to what the company owns and owes, as well as the amount invested by the shareholders.

Question: does what I profit/gain worth it?

Does what I gain, really a gain? Or what I loss really a loss?

Paul was an accountant! He was not an accounting graduate, but God gave him wisdom to know what’s really mean of gaining and losing?

Paul’s Spiritual  Balance Sheet

GAIN THROUGH LOSS

Php 3:1  Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you.

Php 3:2  Watch out for those dogs, those men who do evil, those mutilators of the flesh.

Php 3:3  For it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who glory in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh–

Php 3:4  though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more:

Php 3:5  circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee;

Php 3:6  as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless.

Php 3:7  But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.

Php 3:8  What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ

Php 3:9  and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ– the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.

Php 3:10  I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,

Php 3:11  and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

A.  PAUL’S CHALLENGE

(v3, put no confidence in the flesh)

Php 3:1  Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you.

Php 3:2  Watch out for those dogs, those men who do evil, those mutilators of the flesh.

Php 3:3  For it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who glory in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh–

V3, don’t put confidence in the flesh

Confidence in the flesh is what happens, when we rest on personal achievements. What we did one time becomes our grounds of boasting: a battle we won . . . an experience we went through, that others didn’t have . . . an award we won . . . an honor we had. To rest on past achievements represents confidence in the flesh.

The works of the flesh cannot please God. But as we yield ourselves to the Holy Spirit and trust in Him to work through us, our confidence is in the Lord and not in our flesh. The Bible is clear – confidence in the flesh is sin.

Confidence in the flesh, confidence in wealth, job, education, etc..

False trust, false hope,

(v4) “I have more’ I achieved more.  Paul was more qualified if fleshly credentials will be the basis.

Paul’s capital

B.  PAUL’S CREDENTIALS

Php 3:4  though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more:

Php 3:5  circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee;

Php 3:6  as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless.

Paul’s credentials licensed him to put his confidence in the flesh.

But Paul knew it was A misplaced confidence 4-6

Paul pointed our several things that enabled him to be a better person in any of his readers if confidence in the flesh is about to discuss

A. Right Ritual: Circumcized on the eighth day

B. Right Race: An Israelite

C. Right Family: The tribe of Benjamin

D. Right Religion: Hebrew of the Hebrews

E. Right Occupation: A Pharisee

F. Right Zeal: A persecutor of the church

G. Right Morality: Outwardly keeping all of God’s commands

Paul was Active in his religion. Very religious, favorite  tribe, full bloodied Jew, chosen nation, observed strictly religious rites, holding a key position both in govt and his religion, a person of authority, fame and wealth,

Yet, Paul gave a powerful conviction!

V7 & 8 –  a shocking and stunning statement.

After laying his credentials. Made him applicant to the highest honor for earthly and material honors, he said…

When Paul looked at his balance sheet, There was no gain, only loss.

Walang pakinabang!

C.  PAUL’S CONVICTION

V7, “I now…” there was a complete change! A transformation.

A different perspective. 7-8

Paul does a spiritual inventory to know his spiritual profit-loss statement. On the Profit side he puts two words: Jesus Christ. On the Loss side he lists those seven things he used to brag about. Think about that for a moment.

Paul is casting aside his national heritage,

his ethnic background,

his religious training,

his family heritage,

his years of education,

his training as a Pharisee,

his reputation for religious zeal,

and his standing as a man of high moral character.

He’s saying, “It doesn’t matter at all. It’s all rubbish to me. The only thing that matters in life is knowing Jesus Christ.”

How Paul came to that conclusion?

For Paul, anything that keeps you from Christ is “rubbish” no matter what benefits/privileges you’re receiving from them if you’re losing Christ, they’re all rubbish..

Those were hindrances in knowing the true and only JESUS, Savior. Because Paul will come base on his own merits and goodness, not base on God’s terms and grace.

“for the sake of Christ” – he found the true wealth. Real meaning of life.

“rubbish”  (v8) – the things that we wanted, things that we’re dying to achieved and possess, PAUL CALLED THEM “RUBBISH”

Question, Why? What he found?   V7 sake of Christ, v8 surpassing knowledge of Christ.

V4 “if anyone thinks” Paul was challenging his audience.

Php 3:4  though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more:

Conclusion

Php 3:6  as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless.

Php 3:7  But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.

Php 3:8  What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ

What’s the greatest profit.??

Mar 8:36  For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?

Mar 8:37  Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Mar 8:38  Therefore whoever shall be ashamed of Me and of My Words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man shall also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.

Greatest profit? Luxurious car, house and lot at Corinthians, etc,

SM business, managerial job,

Greatest profit is the world.

Yet, The greatest profit. The greatest wealth is nothing compare to your soul.

“profit”

V8 –  “I have lost all things”  Paul willfully made a choice. He decided for it. He understood the consequences still he wanted it.

He let go the things the world interprets as profit and wealth and achievement!!  Compare to CHRIST, they are all rubbish.

Because they were rubbish.

Paul, Abraham, Moses, all great men of God, they have one thing in common, same attitude, spiritual things over material benefits. Relation to God over worldly blessings, obedience to His Word, though it may led to disobedience to worldly bosses.

Fulfill God’s calling and purpose though He may test us, allows us to be outside of a relationship,,  jobless for quite sometime. Penniless for a period of time…

Paul said, I can do all things…

Are you holding on to man’s traditions, man’s rules, man’s expectations

– and ignoring God’s calling and commands? Are you rushing around doing what only seems important, instead of what’s really necessary?

To what are you committed?  To  What are you passionate?

You want wealth, want a descent job? Want a healthy family? Want a house, a car…?   First consider them all rubbish!
